Brixton Tower

R550.00R1,500.00

One of Johannesburg’s architectural icons, The Brixton Tower, also known as the Sentech Tower is 237m tall. Built in 1962, the entire structure cost only R300 000 to build. The foundations of the 7 820t tower are just 2m deep and 6m wide and have an external diameter at the base of 25m. The concrete tower can withstand wind gusts of up to 200km/h and on windy days, the tower has been known to lean up to 2 m. Due to the circular, wedge-shaped foundation it is immune to earth tremors. About two-thirds through the construction phase, part of the concrete formwork became displaced which gave the tower its “kink”.

The tower has an observation deck that used to be open to the public but was closed in the 1980’s for security reasons.
