1065m above sea level, Cape Town’s Cableway summit station is perched on the western most end of the Table Mountain plateau. Transport options to the top of the mountain were being explored from as early as the 1870’s when it was proposed that a railway line be constructed to access the famous flat-topped summit. Due to disruptions by the Anglo-Boer war and WWI, however, it was only in 1926 that the city council finally committed to the plans of a cableway in its existing location, as proposed by Norwegian engineer Trygve Stromsoe. The Cableway has been completely accident-free since opening on 4 October, 1929.
