Diagonal Street

R550.00R1,500.00

Originally called Jubilee Street, Diagonal Street was at the heart of urban development in Johannesburg around the beginning of the Gold Rush in the late 1800’s. The historic street was re-named because it was the only area of the then Johannesburg City not to be on a rigid East-West North-South axis. Today, this iconic ‘diamond’ building at 11 Diagonal is arguably the areas most recognisable architectural feature.

Commissioned by the multi-national mining company Anglo American in the 80’s, the renowned German-American architect Helmut Jan designed the building to resemble a multi-faceted diamond, with massive glass sheets placed at varying angles to reflect different images of the surrounding buildings. The 80m Skyscraper is now owned by Absa bank and is used as a multi-use office space.
