One of South Africa’s most iconic buildings, the Nelson Mandela bridge (named after the countries first democratically elected president) spans 284m. Stretching over 46 operational railway lines, it is the biggest cable-stayed bridge in Southern Africa and connects two of Johannesburg’s more vibrant areas; Braamfontein and New Town. The bridge was specially designed to be lightweight. A combination of structural steel and concrete composite deck ensures that the main span is as light as possible and allows it to be counterbalanced by the heavier ‘back spans’ that are built from reinforced concrete.
