Ellis Park Stadium (now known as Emirates Airline Park), was originally named after J.D. Ellis, a Johannesburg City councillor, who made available the 13 acres of land on which the current stadium sits. Primarily built as a rugby stadium, the venue has played host to a number of iconic sporting moments in South Africa’s history. Arguably the most notable of which, was when the Springboks South Africa) famously beat the New Zealand rugby team (The All Blacks) in extra time of the final of the 1995 Rugby World Cup.

Home to the Golden Lions (Johannesburg’s largest rugby franchise) the 65 000-seater stadium has, in the past, also hosted political rallies, memorial services and football games. More recently the stadium was used as one of the ten venues for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
