The advent of railway access to Muizenberg in 1883 projected this seaside suburb of Cape Town into becoming Southern Africa’s premier holiday resort of the time. The extension of the Cape’s first railway line to Muizenberg meant thousands of local residents could now frequent its beaches when previously access was restricted to more affluent families who were able to afford a horse and carriage. As the popularity of Muizenberg grew it became necessary to build a station which embodied the importance of this seaside resort. Architect J.C. Tully and the South African Railways set about creating a statement in stone to acknowledge Muizenberg’s new found significance. The result being the timeless Edwardian red-brick structure which we see today..
