Built on top of Sandton City (one of Africa’s largest shopping centers), the Sandton City Office Tower was the first high-rise building in Sandton, and is arguably one of the more recognisable buildings in the area. The construction of Sandton City, and its accompanying office tower in the 70’s, marked a significant change for the Sandton area. It ushered in rapid commercialisation and industrialisation. Sandton came to symbolise the ‘White Flight’ movement of Johannesburg as big business started to move out of the city in the 80’s, securing itself as Johannesburg’s second Central Business District. The 22 storey modernist style Brutalist concrete structure (that was common in South Africa in the early 1970s), rises 110m above ground level and is ‘capped’ with a glass roof that lights up at night. In 2014 the iconic office tower received a revamp, with a new contemporary facade cladding applied over the original concrete structure and a taller spire atop the structure.
