The Castle of Good Hope (Kasteel de Goede Hoop) was built by the Dutch East India Company (the original Dutch settlers in Cape Town) and is the oldest existing colonial building in South Africa. Built as a defense fort, the pentagonal-shaped structure was originally located along the waters edge of table bay, following extensive land reclamation in this foreshore area it now sits inland from the sea. The buildings entrance and bell tower (depicted in the artwork)is a unique example of 17th entury Dutch classicism. The original bell, the oldest in South Africa, was cast in Amsterdam in 1697 by Claude Fremy and weighs 304kg.
