“Build a bridge across the Zambezi where the trains, as they pass, will catch the spray of the Falls”

Although never having visited the Victoria Falls, colonial leader, Cecil Johns Rhodes commisioned the bridge as part of his grand and unfulflled Cape to Cairo railway scheme. After being manufactured in England it was shipped to the Mozambique port of Beira and then transported on the newly constructed railway to the falls.

Te bridge crosses the Zambezi River which is the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia. Te steel, structure is 198 metres long, with a main arch spanning 156.50 metres at a height of 128 metres above the lower water mark of the river in the gorge below.
