Founded in 1904, Rhodes University is the 4th oldest university in South Africa. After its’ humble beginnings in the college department of St Andrew’s College, the university moved to the ‘Drostdy House’ building in 1905. Whilst remaining a small university (with +/- 8000 students) its campus and facilities have changed considerable over the years. The Clock tower, which forms a part of the university’s new admin building, is based on a design by famous South African architect, Sir Herbet Baker. Leading towards this tower the main pedestrian entrance to the university grounds is through ‘The Drostdy Gate’. This arched gateway that leads off Grahamstown’s High Street was originally built in 1841 as the entrance to the military establishment which occupied the then unused Drosdty House grounds.
