Die Es

R550.00R1,500.00

One of Cape Town’s hidden gems, Die Es was designed and built by the family of well known South African Architect duo Gawie and Gwen Fagan. The house is an ode to local vernacular architecture and the timeless design has three key elements. The chimney, wall and roof are all notable features of the house. In original Cape vernacular houses fire places were placed in the kitchen for purely functional reasons. Fagan extends this functional role to a spatial one in Die Es where the hearth is extended to form a winter room in which the family gather. Urban legend has it that Gawie drew the first sketch of the house on a cigarette box.
