Originally the site of a coal fired power station, the Orlando Towers have become one of the most distinctive landmarks in Johannesburg. Construction of the former Orlando Power Station began in 1935 and due to delays caused by the Second World War, was only completed in 1955. After 56 years of service, the power station was shut down in 1998, and transformed into an entertainment and business centre in 2008. Originally the cooling towers of the Orlando Power Station, both of the 33-storey towers (depicted in the artwork) have been painted with iconic South African imagery designed by artist Janine Kleinschmidt. The two towers make up the largest mural painting in South Africa. The site now boasts the world’s first bungee jump between two cooling towers.
