The central building of Pretoria Boys High school, in it’s neoclassical red-brick style, was designed as a rival too its larger contemporary, Sir Herbert Baker’s -Union Buildings. Patrick Eagle chose to site the main buildings on the ridge of the hill giving the school its well-known dramatic setting.

The land allocated to the then Pretoria College comprised about one hundred acres running partly up the side of a ridge. Construction of the buildings began in 1908 with locally quarried mud-stone and locally made bricks (from Kirkness brickworks) combined with Free State sandstone to create the pleasing buildings that are still the attractive centerpiece of the school today.
