The Voortrekker Monument, a massive granite structure, located on a hilltop in Pretoria, was built to commemorate the Voortrekkers* who left the Cape Colony between 1835 and 1854. The Monument is 40m high, with a base of 40m by 40m. Inside the monuments’ massive space, four huge arched windows made from yellow Belgian glass, contain a unique marble Historical Frieze (largest in the world) which depicts the history of the Great Trek. At the center of the domed hall, sits a marble Centograph with the words, Ons vir Jou, Suid-Afrika’ (Afrikaans for ‘We for Thee, South Africa’. Annually at 12 o’clock on 16 December, a ray
of sunlight shines directly onto the marble through a small hole in the dome.

*The Voortrekkers were a groups of Dutch-speaking people who migrated by wagon from the Cape Colony into the interior of South Africa, in order to live beyond the borders of British rule.
