This wireless communications tower is one of Pretorias’ foremost landmarks. The primary need was to establish telephonic microwave system that would connect Pretoria and Johannesburg with the rest of the country. The tower design attempts to embody its technological functions. The aerodynamic profile and structural efficiency dictated the overall shape. The floors follow a hexagonal floor plan which is more efficient than a circular one. On top of the 157m tall concrete structure is the 30m tall steel communications mast. The concrete construction was done in-situ in 16m sections. Approximately 8000m³ concrete and more than 1000 tons of steel reinforcing was used.
