Violence Protection Through Urban Upgrading (VPUU) is an architecture strategy located in Khayelitsha, it uses social engagement and town planning as tools in fighting crime and violence in this underprivileged area are Cape Town. A series of “active boxes” (each facilitating a variety of different functions/ programs) are designed to provide light and passive surveillance along main pedestrian routes that run to and from important transport interchanges in the area. Despite the very small portion of the scheme depicted in the drawing, this project (that has drastically improved the safety of the areas it affects) also incorporates a library, gym, and various playground areas. VPUU has given local residents something to be proud of and represents a signal of hope for the future.
