Widely considered as South Africa’s architectural masterpiece, the Union Buildings in Pretoria forms the official seat of the South African government and houses’ the offices of the country’s president. The iconic building, that hosts South Africa’s presidential inaugurations, is one of the centres of political life in country. Built in an English monumental style the 285m long complex, made of light sandstone, is comprised of two wings (one representing the English anguage and the other; Afrikaans) joined by a semi-circular ‘inner court’ which is representative of the union of a formally divided nation. More recently, a 9m-tall statue of South Africa’s first democratic president, Nelson Mandela, has been placed in the front of the buildings.
The clock chimes of the Unions Buildings’ two bell towers are identical to those of Big Ben in London.
