In addition to its primary function as a beacon that guides vessels into and out of the port of Durban, the Millennium Tower acts as a visual landmark and symbol of the growth and modernisation of Durban, South Africa’s third-largest city. Incorporating numerous unique design features the 75m-high tower acts as a kinetic barometer designed to communicate fluctuations in sun, wind and tide to nearby people. The buildings mesh-wrapped cowl acts as a weather vane, rotating in response to prevailing winds, whilst a black and yellow striped band moves up and down the inside of the cowl to reflect live changes to the ocean tides. Acting as an ever-changing spectacle near the Durban harbour this transient monument is not only of practical use to sailors, surfers and holiday makers but as become a beacon for the transformation of Durban into the third Millennium.
